What Is JTAG?

A Way to Access a Phone When
Nothing Else Works

"The phone is locked. The screen may be cracked. Standard methods have failed. JTAG lets us access the data directly without touching the software."

Every smartphone has connection points on its circuit board. Our technicians use those points to read the phone’s memory directly, bypassing the lock screen, the password, and any software barrier standing in the way.

Nothing is deleted or changed on the device. The process is read-only, which means the data is preserved exactly as it was, and the results are accepted in court.

You don’t need to understand the technology. You just need to know this: if another company told you the data couldn’t be retrieved, call us first.

Works even when the phone is damaged

Cracked screen, broken charging port, phone won't turn on none of that stops JTAG. We work below the operating system, so the phone doesn't need to function normally.

Recovers data other methods miss

Deleted messages, call logs, app data, location history a JTAG extraction produces the most complete picture of what was on the device, including data that was erased.

Every result is court-ready

We document every step, preserve the chain of custody, and deliver a written forensic report. Our examiner can testify as an expert witness in California courts.

When Do You Need JTAG?

Three Situations Where JTAG Is the Answer

You may not have heard of JTAG before, but if you’re in one of these situations, it’s exactly what you need.

Everything else has already failed

Another forensic company or IT team tried to access the phone and couldn't. JTAG is the next step and often the one that works.

The phone is broken or won't turn on

A damaged phone isn't a dead end. As long as the memory inside is intact, JTAG can still reach the data even if the phone itself no longer works.

You need the most complete evidence possible

For serious legal cases, JTAG gives you the deepest extraction available the full picture of everything stored on the device, including deleted content.

Who We Help

Common Situations We Solve Every Day

If any of these sound familiar, we can help.

An attorney needs evidence off a locked phone

The opposing party won't cooperate and the phone can't be unlocked. We access it forensically and deliver results that hold up in court.

A former employee left a locked company phone

The device is locked and IT can't get in. We recover the contents emails, files, messages with a full documented record for HR or legal proceedings.

A loved one passed away and left a locked phone

Financial accounts, personal photos, important contacts all locked inside. We help families and estate executors access what they need, with care and discretion.

Law enforcement needs civilian forensic support

We work alongside agencies and investigators on cases requiring certified third-party forensic examination under proper legal authorization.

The phone is physically damaged but the data is critical

Cracked, waterlogged, or completely unresponsive if the memory chip is intact, there's a good chance we can still recover what's on it.

You suspect an employee stole company data

Evidence of data theft or unauthorized transfers may be on a phone that can't be accessed normally. We recover it in a way that stands up in court.

How It Works

Simple Steps, From Your First Call to Your Report

You don’t need to understand the technical process. Here’s what happens from your side.

You contact us we assess your case for free

Tell us what device you have and what you need. We'll give you an honest answer about what's possible no technical jargon, no obligation.

You send or bring us the device

The moment the device arrives, we log it, photograph it, and create a formal record. From this point forward, every step is documented important if the data will be used in legal proceedings.

We access the device at the hardware level

Our technicians connect to the device's circuit board using professional forensic equipment. The phone is not altered we only read from it, we never write to it.

We extract and analyse the data

We recover everything stored on the device including deleted files where possible. Every piece of data is verified and recorded to prove it hasn't been changed.

You receive your report

We deliver a clear, written forensic report along with the recovered data. The format is accepted in court. If your case goes to hearing, our examiner is available to testify.

Choosing the Right Method

JTAG vs Chip-off What's the Difference?

Both methods access data directly from a phone’s hardware. The right one depends on the condition of the device. Not sure which applies to your situation? We’ll tell you for free.

The non-invasive option

JTAG

The device stays fully intact. We connect to it externally and read the data without removing anything.

Phone is not physically altered
Works on locked and damaged devices
Device is returned to you afterward
Our preferred first approach at hardware level

For the most difficult cases

CHIF-OFF

When JTAG connection points are no longer accessible, we go one step further removing the memory chip and reading it directly.

Used when JTAG is not possible
Works on severely damaged devices
Deepest level of data access available
When the stakes leave no room for failure

Still not sure which one you need?

Common Questions

Answers to Questions We Hear Every Day

What is JTAG extraction, and how does it work on a phone?

JTAG extraction is a hardware-level forensic method that accesses a phone’s data by connecting directly to test points on its circuit board, bypassing the operating system, lock screen, and any software security entirely. Our certified technicians read the device’s memory in a completely read-only process, meaning nothing on the phone is altered, deleted, or overwritten during the extraction.

When is JTAG extraction used instead of standard phone cracking?

JTAG extraction is used when software-based methods have already failed or are not viable. This includes phones that are heavily locked, physically damaged, unresponsive, or for which previous unlock attempts have been exhausted. It is also the preferred approach when the most complete extraction possible is required for serious legal or investigative cases.

Will JTAG extraction damage or wipe my phone?

No. JTAG extraction is a completely read-only process. Our technicians connect to the device externally through its circuit board test points and read the data without writing, modifying, or deleting anything. The phone is returned to you in the same condition it arrived in.

Can JTAG extraction work on a phone that is broken or won't turn on?

Yes. JTAG extraction works below the operating system, so the phone does not need to function normally. Cracked screens, broken charging ports, and devices that fail to power on are all workable as long as the internal memory is intact. If the memory chip has sustained physical damage, we assess whether chip-off forensics is the appropriate next step.

What devices does JTAG extraction support?

JTAG extraction is primarily used on Android devices and legacy phones, including Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Motorola, LG, OnePlus, Huawei, Nokia, BlackBerry, ZTE, Alcatel, Android tablets, and older feature phones. JTAG extraction is not used for iPhones. For locked or inaccessible iOS devices, we use separate certified forensic methods that are equally effective. If you are unsure which service applies to your device, contact us for a free assessment.

Can JTAG extraction recover deleted data?

Yes. Because JTAG extraction reads directly from the device’s memory at a physical level, it can recover data that has been deleted through normal use or even after a factory reset, including messages, call logs, photos, app data, and location history, provided the storage space has not yet been overwritten.

Yes to both. JTAG extraction is a court-recognized forensic discipline performed under proper legal authorization. Grizzly Digital Data follows strict chain-of-custody protocols, records cryptographic hash values to verify data integrity, and delivers written forensic reports in evidentiary format. Our principal examiner is qualified to provide expert witness testimony in California courts.

What is the difference between JTAG extraction and chip-off forensics?

JTAG extraction connects to the device externally through circuit board test points, leaving the phone physically intact. Chip-off forensics goes one step further by physically removing the memory chip and reading it directly. JTAG is the preferred first approach at the hardware level. Chip-off is used when JTAG connection points are inaccessible or the device is too severely damaged for JTAG to be performed.
