What Is Chip-off?

The Last Resort That Rarely Fails

"The phone is gone ” but the memory chip inside it often isn't. We remove it, read it, and recover what's on it."

Every smartphone has a small memory chip that stores everything on the device  messages, photos, call logs, app data. That chip is far more durable than the phone around it. Even when the phone is shattered, burned, or waterlogged, the chip often survives.

We remove that chip and read it directly using specialist equipment, bypassing the phone, the password, and the damage completely.

Important: The phone cannot be returned to working use after chip-off. We always check whether a less invasive method is possible first chip-off is only used when it’s the right answer.

Works when nothing else does

Burned, crushed, completely destroyed if the memory chip is intact, we can read it. This is the method for when every other option is exhausted.

The most complete data set available

Chip-off produces a full image of everything on the device including deleted files and content no software method can reach.

Every result is court-ready

Strict chain-of-custody, court-validated tools, written forensic report. Our examiner can testify as an expert witness in California courts.

When Is Chip-off the Right Choice?

Three Situations Where Nothing Else Works

Chip-off is not the first method we try but when the situation calls for it, it’s the one that gets the job done.

The phone is physically destroyed

Burned, crushed, or shattered. All other connection points are gone. The memory chip may still be readable.

Every other method has been tried

Phone cracking, JTAG, and ISP have all been attempted or ruled out. Chip-off is the final step and often the one that works.

The case is too important to give up on

High-stakes legal cases where the data on that phone could change everything. We go as far as the situation demands.

Who We Help

Common Situations We Solve Every Day

If any of these sound familiar  even if you’ve been told the data is gone contact us first.

Another company said the data was unrecoverable

Chip-off is a specialist service most labs don't offer. If you've been turned away, call us we may be able to help where others couldn't.

An attorney needs evidence from a destroyed phone

The device was damaged before it could be examined. We recover what's on the chip and deliver court-ready results.

The phone was in a fire, flood, or accident

The phone looks unrecoverable. The data may not be. If the chip survived the damage, chip-off can still reach it.

A company device was deliberately damaged

An employee destroyed a phone before returning it. Chip-off can often recover data that was meant to be gone.

Law enforcement needs data from a damaged device

Serious cases where the device was recovered in poor condition. We work under proper legal authorization.

A loved one's phone was badly damaged

Irreplaceable photos and personal records on a phone that no longer works. Handled with care and full discretion.

How It Works

From Your First Call to Your Report

Here’s what to expect no technical knowledge needed.

Contact us free case assessment

Tell us about the device what it is and what happened to it. We assess whether chip-off is viable and give you an honest answer before you commit to anything.

Send or bring us the device even if it's in pieces

The moment it arrives, we log it, photograph it, and create a formal evidence record. Every step from here is documented.

We remove the memory chip

Our technician removes the memory chip using specialist de-soldering equipment in a controlled environment protecting the chip throughout.

We read the chip and recover the data

The chip is placed into a specialist reader that extracts everything on it including deleted files. Every file is verified and recorded.

You receive your report and recovered data

Written forensic report in court-accepted format. Our examiner is available to testify as an expert witness in California courts if needed.

Common Questions

Answers to Questions We Hear Every Day

When is chip-off forensics the right method for recovering phone data?

Chip-off forensics is the right method when all other options have been exhausted or ruled out. This includes phones that are burned, crushed, waterlogged, or shattered beyond any possibility of normal function, devices where JTAG test points and ISP contact points are no longer accessible due to physical damage, and cases where another forensic lab has already attempted recovery and failed. It is also used when the stakes of a legal case are too high to accept any less thorough method.

Will chip-off forensics destroy the phone?

The phone cannot be returned to working use after chip-off forensics. The memory chip is physically removed from the circuit board, which means the device is not restored afterward. However, by the time chip-off forensics is needed, the device is almost always already non-functional. The goal is not to save the phone but to recover the data inside it, and that data is preserved completely.

Can chip-off forensics recover data from a phone that was in a fire?

Often yes. Memory chips are significantly more heat-resistant than the rest of a phone’s components. In many fire-damaged devices, the chip survives even when the screen, casing, and circuit board are visibly destroyed. Chip-off forensics works by reading the chip directly, so as long as the chip itself was not destroyed by heat, data recovery is frequently possible. Contact us with the details of the device, and we will give you an honest assessment.

What data can chip-off forensics recover from a damaged phone?

Chip-off forensics produces a complete image of everything stored on the device’s memory chip, including text messages, call logs, photos, videos, emails, app data, location history, and deleted files that have not yet been overwritten. Because it reads directly from the memory chip rather than through the operating system, it captures data that no software-based method can reach.

How long does chip-off forensics take?

Most chip-off forensics cases are completed within 3 to 7 business days from device intake, depending on the condition of the device and the complexity of the chip reading required. Severely damaged devices may require additional assessment time. We provide a specific timeframe after the initial evaluation, and same-day assessments are available for urgent cases.

Is chip-off forensics used on iPhones as well as Android phones?

Chip-off forensics is primarily used on Android devices and legacy phones. iPhones present additional complexity due to hardware encryption tied directly to the device’s secure enclave, which does not transfer with the chip. For locked or damaged iPhones, we use other certified forensic methods appropriate to the device. Contact us with your specific device details, and we will confirm the right approach at no charge.

What is the chip-off forensics process for a phone that is in multiple pieces?

We accept devices in any condition, including phones that have been shattered, crushed, or broken into multiple pieces. When a device arrives in fragments, our technicians first assess whether the memory chip is physically intact and locatable within the debris. If it is, we proceed with careful extraction using specialist desoldering and micro-soldering equipment. The physical state of the phone around the chip does not determine whether chip-off forensics is viable. The chip itself does.

Can chip-off forensics be used as evidence if the phone was already sent to another lab?

Yes, provided the chain of custody has been documented throughout. If a previous lab handled the device without altering or damaging the memory chip, chip-off forensics can still be performed, and the results can still be court-admissible. We assess the condition of the device and any prior handling records when it arrives. If chain-of-custody documentation from the previous lab is available, bring it with the device, as it strengthens the evidentiary record.
